Animal Intakes

IF AN ANIMAL IS LOCATED IN LAMAR COUNTY, PLEASE VISIT https://www.lchspaws-al.org/

Stray or Abandoned Animals

We do NOT pick up animals or investigate cases of abuse. You will need to contact Marion/Winston Animal Shelter (MWAS) at (205) 487-2581 as they are contracted by Marion County and its' cities to handle these types of requests. If you would like to bring in a stray animal that MWAS has refused, please email or text ALL of the below items to info@hooforpaw.org or 205-549-2565, we do NOT accept phone calls due to the inability to properly document them:

  • Date and Name of MWAS employee or volunteer that refused animal with reason for refusal

  • Location animal was last seen

  • Time animal was last seen

  • description of animal

IF AN ANIMAL IS SEVERLY INJURED OR HAS A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY THERE IS A LIST OF EMERGENCY CLINICS IN OUR AREA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE, YOU MAY CONTACT ONE OF THEM AS WE ARE NOT EQUIPPED, TRAINED OR LICENSED TO HANDLE THOSE, NOR DO WE HAVE AN ONSITE VETERINARIAN.

Surrender Your Own Animal

Due to limited capacity during construction, we are not currently taking in owner surrenders, unless you can keep your pet until we are able to rehome it. We are offering free assistance through Adopt-a-Pet.com, please click the Find Your Pet A New Home link towards the bottom of this page for more information. If you would like to surrender/turn in your own animal or assistance re-homing your own animal please email us the completed Surrender Form to info@hooforpaw.org.

Note: There is an owner surrender fee ($25 for less than 25 lbs., $35 for over 25 lbs., and $50 for 100 lbs. and over) you will be charged per animal, maximum of $150, if you turn the animal in instead of keeping it in your care until we are able to secure a new foster or permanent home. This fee helps us with the cost of vaccinating. If you can provide documentation from a licensed veterinarian showing animal is current and up to date on all vaccinations and spayed or neutered, the surrender fee is waived, all documentation is verified.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN WE ACCEPT AGGRESSIVE ANIMALS! IF YOUR PET HAS BIT OR INJURED A PERSON OR ANOTHER ANIMAL FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN SELF DEFENSE YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT THE MARION/WINSTON ANIMAL SHELTER, SEE THEIR NUMBER ABOVE.

Report Animal Cruelty, Abandonment or Nuisance Animals

Contact your local law enforcement and ask that they contact the county impounding officer at the Marion/Winston Animal Shelter (telephone number shown above). We cannot enter private property nor have the authority to investigate these issues. If the animal is located within city limits you will need to contact your local police department at their non-emergency number, unless it is a life threatening situation or there is someone in potential danger. If the animal is located outside city limits you will need to contact Marion County Sheriff's Department at 205-921-7433 or you may send them an email at info@marionsoal.com. We cannot come pick up your neighbors dog for tearing up your garbage, etc. Appropriate legal procedures, reporting and documentation must be provided as directed by local law enforcement.

Please note that we are ONLY responding to reports and requests that follow the above instructions due to the overwhelming number of phone calls we're receiving. We are volunteer based and ran by people who also work other 40+ hour/week jobs with families and animals of their own so it is the only way we've found to keep track of everyone without missing a request or need. ALSO NOTE we are ONLY accepting requests and responding to emails between 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM Mondays - Fridays and from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturdays. We are not accepting any requests on Sundays.
